Expansion: Huntsville is moving forward with a 2.4-acre expansion of Big Spring Park East on the former City Hall site, with City Council set to vote on a $12.5 million construction contract with Fite Construction for a 400-day project. Plans include new concrete plazas, a playground, public art walks, water features, landscaped areas, and an upper pavilion with restrooms that will be open most of the year and available for event reservations. The expansion will also add ADA-compliant switchback trails and a lower elevated plaza with built-in seating and tables for gathering, dining, and chess.

Housing: Huntsville has earned a rare perfect housing affordability score of 100, meaning the median household income in the city can fully support the median-priced home — a standout achievement as affordability worsens in many major U.S. markets. This exceptional rating reflects Huntsville’s steady new housing construction, relatively low cost of living, abundant land supply, and strong job growth from federal agencies, defense contractors, tech firms, and advanced manufacturing. The city’s balanced housing market and economic strength make it increasingly attractive for families and businesses evaluating relocation options.

Governor Kay Ivey has reappointed Drake State Community & Technical College President Dr. Patricia Sims to serve another term on the Alabama State Port Authority Board of Directors as the Northern District representative. Sims previously served on the nine-member board from 2020 to 2025, which provides fiscal and policy oversight for the Port of Mobile — a key driver of Alabama’s economy and job growth. Her continued role underscores local leadership’s influence in statewide transportation and economic development efforts.
Longtime Huntsville business leader David Nast is retiring, prompting local leaders to reflect on his decades of influence shaping the area’s growth and community banking landscape. Nast founded Progress Bank in 2008, guiding its expansion into a trusted partner for families and businesses before its 2023 integration with United Community Bank, where he continued to lead as Alabama State President and helped ensure a smooth transition. Colleagues say his people-first leadership and commitment to continuity have left a lasting impact on teams, customers, and the broader regional economy.
