Ranking: Huntsville is back among the top-performing cities in the country, according to the latest Milken Institute rankings. The Rocket City jumped from 40th out of the nation’s 200 largest cities to No. 16 in the institute’s 2024 rankings of top-performing cities. Austin, Texas, tops the list, followed by Raleigh, North Carolina, and Boise, Idaho.

Revitalization: The city of Huntsville and the Huntsville Housing Authority are partnering with a private developer to revitalize a distressed neighborhood near the city’s downtown core. The Huntsville City Council approved a memorandum of understanding with private developer McCormack Baron Salazar for the $400 million Mill Creek revitalization project.

Defense

Acquisition: BlueHalo announced the acquisition of Eclipse Technologies, a provider of differentiated products and solutions to the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community. BlueHalo intends to utilize Eqlipse’s technical talent and suite of products to deliver enhanced scale and broader capabilities to the company’s customers, accelerating the development and fielding of its advanced defense technologies.

Government

Huntsville Music Office: The Huntsville City Council approved the position of Huntsville’s Music Office Programs Coordinator and approved several job openings. The budget reappropriations featured nearly $600k in funds to support local projects and organizations.

Education

Collaboration: The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command will enter into an Educational Partnership Agreement with The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering to collaborate and secure a partnership between the two institutions. The collaboration will deepen ASCTE students’ understanding of cybersecurity for weapon systems and provide expertise in modeling, advanced image processing, and engineering analysis.

Designation: The University of Alabama in Huntsville has been re-designated as a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research by the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity. The designation was earned after a comprehensive review of cybersecurity-related research activities and outcomes from the students, faculty, and research staff involved in computer science and computer engineering doctoral programs and in the UAH Center for Cybersecurity Research and Education.
